Recap 18: Night of the Hunters

Updated: Jun 21

Once there was a man, a mighty man, whose metal had never been truly tested. For you see, Bubblegum lived a life in fear. Fear of causing harm to the innocent. Fear of hurting those weaker than him. A life lived in fear is a life half lived. But with the Devourer released, Bubblegum no longer had a reason to hold back. He unleashed everything he had. An epic battle ensued and even with Bubblegum badly beaten, he wasn't out for the count. A celestial being walked through the halls and lifted Bubblegum to his feat. Goblina, in her devoutness, was the only witness to this phenomenon. The being greeted Goblina and informed her she was not there for her. What divine lineage did Bubblegum possess that deemed him worthy of such an interaction? With utter destruction on the brink of happening, the crew of the Invictus will have to put a pin into what they just witnessed and investigate Bubblegum's past at another time.

The team rallied to try and defeat the abomination now that Bubblegum put it into a position we could handle. Joy encouraged Ash to sneeze on the thing, hoping a 1,000 years in isolation would have played havoc on its immune system, and an evolved human germ could take the thing out. However, Joy forgot that germs take time to invade and incubate, so maybe in 2-4 days, it would be sick in bed too exhausted to defeat the universe. One could hope. Tybar was focusing on getting the professor over to the container unit until Ash pulled that little stunt. He abandons the professor to get Ash out of harm's way. So Joy was left to push him in his chair so he could activate the sequence to get the Devourer back into captivity. The professor wasn't too worried, for you see he had a backup plan. I nice little detinator that would make the whole station go boom. Joy, in her few moments of rare charisma, convinced the professor she would do it, and was able to remove the device from his unstable hands

Things were going rather well until the elevator stopped at our floor and a flood of Bounty Hunters with Chanterelle in their grasps arrived. There wasn't really enough time to relay the situation to the Bounty Hunters who were demanding our surrender, so we did what we always do, fire first and explain later. It was chaos. Tybar was slicing off heads, and body slamming people into the floor. Chanty was casting fog putting everyone into a desperate disadvantage to see who was actually there and could be attacked. Ash was gushing over the broken body of Bubblegum and wasn't too much help there. Eventually, we found ourselves in a situation to move forward. The Devourer was back in its container. Several Bounty Hunters were out of the mix thanks to Tybar. One fleed through the air ducts, leaving us with a Bounty Hunter that seemed we could actually reason with. She made a deal with us. We weren't worth the trouble, but she would take proof that from us that she had indeed encountered us, but in a tragic accident we were all destroyed. All we had to do was hand over pieces of our DNA for her to offer up as payment. Tybar, sliced off his ear and handed it over. Joy stood there gobsmacked. What? How? Why? She really, really didn't want to give up any part of her. Ash handed over her middle toe. Ugh, Joy really didn't see a way out of this. She decided that she was willing to take her pinky, thinking at the end of this, she could upgrade it to a golden, mechanical one that encased a nice little sleeping dart, her favorite go-to. All that was left to do was leave in the elevator and make everything look like an accident.
