"To be a curator is to be a custodian of things." - Hans Ulrich Obrist
Year: 1995
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
Delta Green is alerted to a series of bizarre deaths at the Met, centering on the new "Secrets of the Nile: Cairo Exhibit." The first victim, Dr. Evelyn Reed, the exhibit's assistant curator, is found mummified in her office. Later, a security guard, Frank Miller, is discovered in the same condition. Autopsy reports from medical examiner Dr. Marcus Thorne note that the bodies appear desiccated, with strange, glyph-like markings etched into their skin.
The deaths seem tied to a specific object within the collection: a canopic jar. This jar was a late addition to the exhibit, donated by the estate of a reclusive collector.
The deaths are not random; they are a consequence of some ritual. The ritual's target is a scroll hidden within the jar, the "yet’efu negerochi karita" nicknamed the "Thoth Chart". When translated, the hieroglyphs on the scroll read, "A Map of Lost Things". It is believed to be a guide to other powerful relics scattered across the globe. Anyone who threatens the chart's secrecy or attempts to steal it, is being judged and punished by a creature. This entity, a forgotten protector of the dead, is seeking to cleanse the museum of all who have profaned.
