It's late summer of 1995. The SCP Foundation receives a panicked, garbled transmission from an isolated research outpost, Site-73, deep in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.
Initial reports suggest a containment breach of an unknown nature, accompanied by bizarre psychological phenomena affecting the personnel. The last intelligible words heard were: "…he said it… It can’t be unheard…
Delta Green has dispatched your team to investigate, contain or eliminate, and report. You are told the SCP is refusing to acknowledge the containment breach and even the existence of Site-73.
Setting & Atmosphere:
Site-73: A research facility built into a mountainside, designed for containing psychological and informational anomalies. It’s seen better days, showing signs of neglect and recent, inexplicable damage. The surrounding wilderness is dense, oppressive, and adds to the feeling of being cut off from the world.
The Anomaly & The Threat:
The central anomaly is SCP-404, "The Pattern." Is a cognitohazard, not a physical entity in the traditional sense, but an emergent, highly contagious logic construct. It manifests as a self-perpetuating thought that infiltrates the human mind. Its primary effect is to induce hyper-associative psychosis, where the victim finds profound, terrifying connections between seemingly unrelated concepts, leading to total mental collapse. Imagine a person seeing a pattern in the dust that reveals the true nature of reality, or hearing a cosmic symphony in the hum of a fluorescent light.
WARNING:
DO NOT: attempt to record, repeat, or translate any written or verbal communication not explicitly cleared by command.
DO NOT: trust any sensory data without confirmation from two external sources.
If you begin to see patterns that make too much sense, stop.
The contact window closes in 72 hours. After that, we burn Site-73.
