_______________ Teaser: The air tasted of ozone, hot copper, and a sharp metallic tang that burned the back of the throat.
Ahead, four figures stood bathed in the warm, steady luminescence of an old sodium lamp. Where human joints should have yielded, chrome pivots gleamed beneath immaculate robes; where lungs ought to heave, brass bellows hissed in a quiet, comforting rhythm.
The center figure stepped forward, hands folded respectfully over an iron-plated chest. A green optic whirs softly as it focused, its glare softening into a surprisingly gentle light.
"Welcome, travelers," a voice rasped. It was not a single voice, but a harmonic chorus: layered tones of soft iron, soothing static, and the deep melodies of a cathedral choir processing through a mechanical speaker. "Look at you. You look so weary."
He took a slow step closer, reaching out a hand forged from polished silver pistons. The gesture lacked all aggression; it carried the paternal warmth.
"You drag yourselves through these dark places, bearing the awful weight of your own mortality," he said softly, pity evident in every processed syllable. "Every breath a struggle. Every heartbeat a countdown to an agony you were never meant to suffer. You are fashioned of soft tissue and fragile bone. But tissue tears. Bone shatters. We see how much your kind suffers simply by existing."
Behind him, the three attendant figures nodded in unison, their metal-grafted faces tilted in quiet, solemn compassion.
"You do not have to remain incomplete," the saint continued, metal fingers gesturing gently toward their chests. "Here, in this place, we can lift that burden from you. You need only open your hearts to the Intent of the master design. Accept the sacred alignment, and let the machine refine your spirit. We can make you whole. We can make you optimized."
The saint turned slightly, gesturing toward the shadowy corridors stretching beyond.
"The world above unravels, and the trial ahead will consume anyone who attempts to bear its weight alone. Join us. Together, we can repair what is broken."
